Will Motorola's Droid Replace the Standalone GPS Unit

11/22/10

The Android phone by Google and Motorola has some highly integrated GPS tracking features that work directly with Google maps.  Does this mean the the droid phone will directly take the place of any of the GPS device units out there?  My guess is that it won't because as extensive as Google maps is, it is still very innacurate compared to many of the other mapping applications out there.  I have seen numerous errors on Google maps that would totally leave the driver completely lost when they have followed the maps, so it would stand to reason, that the Droid phone has it's limitations as well.  However, read on for more on GPS tracking an the Droid phone.

Here are some videos about the Droid phone and GPS tracking units:

Droid GPS glitch Google Maps

When I was in Kansas my GPS said I was going 188 MPH East over Nebraska! It was a circle not an arrow and it passed by an airport. It was tracking someone on an aircraft and showing it on my screen. How could that happen? I don't know if it was a goo...

Here is an article titled:  "Does Motorola's Droid Spell the End of the Standalone GPS Unit?"

Motorola has a history of producing cell phones which are every bit as good as, if not better than, those of other manufacturers in the market. Yet consumers have often opted for other brands. This state of affairs may change with the advent of the Droid, Motorola's latest smartphone. The Droid, a collaboration with Google and Verizon, is Motorola's most attractive phone to date.

The phone is divided into two sections: the top consists of a display screen and the lower part of the body contains a keyboard. The display screen is a generous 3.7 inches wide. This will make for a better viewing experience because the display will run from edge to edge. Just below the screen are navigation buttons: back, menu, home, and search.

Sliding the top section of the phone upwards will reveal the full QWERTY keypad. This is especially handy if you want to type longer or more detailed messages. The top of the phone holds a power/sleep button and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. On the edge are the the camera button and volume rocker positioned opposite each other. The left side contains a Micro USB port and the back of the phone houses the camera and flash. The speaker is camouflaged by a thin gold crosshatch.

Most of the new phone's innovations are under the hood. But there are a few pleasing visual tweaks as well. Google has added some cross-application animations and new fades into version 2.0 of Android, the mobile operating system. This gives it a more contemporary feel. The icons and other visual elements have also been updated. More importantly, the Droid comes integrated with Google Maps and has taken the GPS industry by storm with its Turn by Turn navigation application.

Google seems to have pulled out all the stops for this one - providing map, traffic, satellite and location information. The text-to-speech function makes directions easier to understand. More useful perhaps is the variety of information such as ATM, parking, gas station and restaurant locations. The inclusion of Google Maps at no extra charge is really very useful as mapping software for use with standalone GPS units is very expensive.

There are also some snazzy extra features. The phone comes supplied with a dock and a car mount so it can serve as a proper GPS unit. The car mount uses a sensor to automatically switch the phone to navigation mode when contact is made. This smartphone is certainly creating waves in the industry.
