As schools are out for the summer, many teenagers and college students will be planning vacations together. This form of “treasure hunting” can be lots of fun and a great way to bring a group of people together in a competitive way. Plus, a picnic or watermelon/ice cream is a great ending touch to a summertime geocaching activity.
The roots of geocaching go back to a man named Dave Ulmer, a GPS enthusiast who wanted to test the accuracy of his unit. After hiding a container (with stuff inside), Dave posted the coordinates of the hidden container on the internet for other GPS owners to locate—and within three days, the “cache” had been located and the results posted on the internet. This fun idea quickly caught on and others began hiding their own caches and posting the coordinates on the internet.
It also proved that GPS tracking can be highly accurate. GPS technology consists of a series of 24 satellites orbiting the earth, working in groups (usually threes) to determine the latitude and longitude of the receiver on earth. This information downloads to the internet or a mobile device, and is real-time (refreshes every 5 seconds, sometimes even faster).
GPS technology offers a lot of options, like geofencing (setting boundaries and notifications for when your vehicle leaves a certain area, a great anti-theft device), speed tracking and route tracking (good for teenager accountability), and a host of other tools.
In order to have a geocaching activity of your own, you’ll just need a few things to get started. Check out the official geocaching site, where you can find out where caches are in your area. You can even register and become a member (at no charge).
You’ll also need a GPS receiver that has coordinate capabilities. Rocky Mountain Tracking is a great source for finding GPS units that are great quality. Make sure you know exactly how to use your GPS—how to use the coordinates and how to read the receiver. Some geocachers recommend a topographical map—GPS will tell locations, but it won’t always let you know there’s a big mountain or flooded river between you and the cache. Some also recommend a compass, water/snacks, and other items to leave in the cache to replace what you might take from it.
If you have a large enough group and several people with GPS units, you can have several groups “race” to the cache—a competitive way to build leadership and teamwork while having fun. If you are assigned to planning summer activities, think no further than geocaching.

Golf—what could be better than spending your afternoon on the course? Well, if you didn’t have a golf cart, you might be in for some inconvenience. Golf carts can be stolen just as easily as any other vehicle, and many golf courses and country clubs experience stolen equipment. Some estimate the costs due to vandalism of this nature at approximately $8 million a year.
One survey indicated that 48% of operators reported unauthorized use of golf carts; 42% reported the carts being driven in off-limit properties; 21% reported theft of golf carts; and 27% had pulled golf carts out of lakes or creeks. This kind of vandalism and theft results high extremely high losses for country clubs and golf courses. One of the best ways to prevent vandalism and theft of golf carts and similar equipment vehicles is the installation of a GPS tracking device.

What could be a worse nightmare than being lost in a Florida swamp—alligator territory—for four days and nights? It could be worse if it were your child, with Asperger’s syndrome (a type of pervasive development disorder, PDD), lost and alone in a Florida swamp—alligator territory—for four days and nights.
For the Bloom family, this nightmare was their life last month while rescuers searched frantically for their 11-year-old daughter Nadia. Nadia was found by a neighbor and friend from church and miraculously, had only suffered bug bites and dehydration; in spite of the fact that rescuers were inclined to believe that the missing child was probably no longer alive after what seemed like an eternity in that environment.
What are some symptoms of Asperger’s? And while these symptoms don’t sound particularly dangerous, in Nadia’s case, her preoccupation with nature (she had taken her camera to get wildlife shots) nearly cost her life.

The first decision that must be made when purchasing a GPS tracking system is to choose between a cell phone with GPS tracking capabilities or a vehicle tracking system. Some uses are just naturally suited for vehicle GPS tracking systems, so they would be the natural choice over cell phone trackers. But for many tracking purposes, a vehicle system and a cell phone system would appear to work equally well. However, this is not the case. Although choosing between a vehicle tracker and a cell phone tracking is an important decision, it is not a difficult one to make.
Let’s start with cell phone tracking systems. Cell phone trackers have a few advantages, but unfortunately the disadvantages seem to outweigh them. One advantage of cell phones is that they could provide more continual coverage. People leave their cars in parking lots, but they usually take their cell phone with them, which allows them to be tracked for more of the day. Another advantage is that most people already own a cell phone, so they don’t have to go shopping around for GPS tracking systems. All they have to do is call up their cell phone provider and ask to add a GPS tracking plan to their cell phone bill. While this all sounds very good, cell phone trackers have three major disadvantages. They are not as accurate as vehicle tracking systems. The tracking unit has to rely on a battery that is being drained by many other programs. And these tracking units have to use cell phone towers, which can often mean spotty service.
Now let’s take a look at vehicle tracking systems. These GPS tracking systems are much more accurate than cell phones and can track a vehicle much more closely and precisely. These systems record the location within a few feet, while cell phone trackers may be off as much as a couple hundred feet. These systems can also send out more frequent signals, giving a more complete record. The batteries on these trackers also last longer, whether the unit is passive or real time. The one drawback of vehicle tracking systems is that they may be more expensive than adding GPS capabilities to your cell phone bill. However, vehicle trackers give much better information than cell phone trackers, so it is not a waste of money to choose the higher quality system.
It is clear that vehicle tracking systems are the better trackers to use for almost every situation. Cell phone trackers might seem like a more economical option, but an unreliable system is not worth paying for. Give a vehicle GPS tracking systems a try, and you will see that they are clearly the best option.

Some items always seem to get lost. Wallets containing important items like a driver’s license and a credit card can easily be left in a department store. Keys are often dropped between the parking space and the office. Cell phones can easily be set down and forgotten. And then of course, any of these items are good targets for thieves. Car keys and credit cards are on the top of any thief’s list of things to steal. And as cell phones today are becoming more and more expensive and high tech, they are also being targeted more frequently by thieves. However, if the phone has GPS tracking capabilities, it could make the cell phone easily retrievable.
Although GPS tracking on cell phones is not as accurate or as reliable as traditional GPS devices, it can still be useful. Many newer cell phones are compatible with various GPS applications. Some cell phone providers have GPS tracking plans that are available to their customers for an additional monthly fee. Real time trackers in cell phones still don’t measure up to those in vehicle tracking devices, but they will probably continue to get better in the coming years.
Recently, a man in Florida had his smartphone stolen from his truck as well as several other items, including a digital camera and a gun. Since the iPhone was equipped with a real time GPS tracking device, the man tried to look up its location on his computer. He found that the phone was turned on the signal was showing a location of only about 15 miles away.
The local law enforcement officials were notified and given the GPS tracking information. Although the man claimed that he purchased the phone from someone on the street, the police found the other stolen items when they searched the house.

GPS technology relies on a satellite/control center/monitor system of use. This means that all the tracking done by GPS trackers starts in space with one of the several dozen satellites. The satellites then transmit information to the control center, which then sends that information to the monitors (individual users) for their analysis. This type of GPS technology is used in many different areas of life—from cars, to children, to cell phones. One of the most recent uses of GPS tracking devices is to follow and protect endangered species of animals.
From the Giant Panda to the Arctic Fox, endangered animals have long been on people’s minds. There are many organizations that have been established to protect these animals, and one of these organizations within the US is the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center (NPWRC). This organization recently met to discuss protecting and tracking some wild animals using GPS trackers. The benefits of using GPS technology are that scientists can track the migration habits and the numbers of the wildlife. One specific animal that has been tracked with GPS is the whooping crane. GPS trackers reported that after a census was taken, there were 57 fewer “whoopers” that returned this year to their summer home in Alberta, Canada, from their winter home in Texas. Twenty-three were recorded to have died in the preserve in Texas, and the others are supposed to have died in the migration process back to Canada.

Bank robberies have long been the subject of mystery novels and police dramas. Typically, the robber holds up the bank in the first few minutes of the story, and the rest of the tale is devoted to detailing the police or investigator’s attempts to track down the criminal and put him behind bars. Thanks to GPS tracking, such lengthy investigations may soon be a thing of the past. Banks can now protect their money with tracking devices, foiling criminals before they even get out the door.
Several recent bank robbery attempts have been stopped using GPS tracking, allowing police to find the thief within minutes of the robbery and to begin arrest procedures almost immediately. One Florida bank teller handed the robber a bag of cash when he asked for it; inside the bag a GPS tracking device followed the man’s movements and relayed them to law enforcement. Most bank robbers are looking for quick, easy cash and will surrender without much struggle when confronted by police officers.
In addition to protecting bank assets, GPS tracking has also been used to protect high dollar items such as cars, laptops, and jewelry against theft. In each case, the presence of the tracking device enables police to recover the stolen item much more quickly than they could have using traditional procedures. Stolen property that isn’t protected with the technology can take months to be recovered, and sometimes it never is.
Law enforcement has increasingly begun to rely on GPS tracking to help them in many of their regular duties. One common application of the technology places a transmitter in an ankle bracelet that most be worn by paroled offenders. Police can use the tracking information to keep tabs on a parolee and to find him quickly if he breaks his parole. They can also set up perimeters around schools and other off-limits places to ensure that paroled sex offenders or other criminals stay out. If a perimeter is crossed without notification and without a legitimate reason, law enforcement will know immediately and can address the problem promptly.
As GPS technology continues to advance, more applications are bound to surface that will help law enforcement perform their jobs more efficiently. In the meantime, it’s good to know that banks can keep our hard earned cash under surveillance—even if it leaves the premises in a bank robber’s pocket.

It is interesting to see the other types of tracking technoligies used today because we are now living in the age of the fishbowl where everyone knows where you go and what you do, even if you are not aware of it!
Tracking devices, also called 6-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF)
devices, are defined as technological tools that are used to
observe a specific person's movements by the use of a
transmitter to relay radio signals back to a receiver which then
enables one to pinpoint the exact location of that particular
person.
Global Positioning Satellite, homing devices and cell phones are
part of the tracking device technology, and they have all very
useful purposes.
GPS, for instance, enables car drivers to have a knowledgeable
virtual "companion" that can give out directions and help you be
located by the proper authorities if and when you've gotten into
an accident.
As a corollary, this technology can also be implanted on very
important persons just in case they go missing or worse,
kidnapped, and need to be found pronto. In fact, even
non-celebrities are afforded this option.

So we all know what tracking devices are and what they could do.
But what exactly makes them tick? Such devices are based on
electromagnetic, acoustic, mechanical or optical technology.
Mechanical tracking devices can measure orientation and position
with the use of a direct mechanical connection between a
reference point and the target. The advantage of this type of
gadget is that they are accurate and their lag is short. The
main drawback is that the operator's motion is limited to the
mechanical arm.
Optical tracking devices use the information contained in the
projection of the LED's to identify the position and orientation
of the head.
There come in two kinds: in the first one, cameras are placed on
top of HMD's while a set of infrared LED's are placed above the
head at specific locations in a given environment.
The other type has cameras mounted on a fixed frame with fewer
LED's located at known position on the HMD. These types of
tracking devices both have high update rates and short lags,
although they usually suffer from line of sight problem.
Electromagnetic tracking devices work by measuring the magnetic
fields' strength generated by sending current through three tiny
wire coils, placed perpendicular to each other.
These are then implanted in a small unit attached to the entity
the system needs to track. These types of devices can track
multiple objects simultaneously although they may experience
interference with mechanisms that produce magnetic fields of
their own.
Acoustic tracking devices employ ultrasonic sound waves that
measure the position and orientation of the entity being
tracked. This can be done through time-of-flight tracking and
phase-coherence tracking.
The first type works by measuring the time needed to take for
the sound sent out by transmitters placed on the target to reach
sensors located at specific points.
The second type works by measuring the difference in phase
between the sound waves produced by a transmitter on the target
and those given off by a transmitter at some reference point.

your destination and back home. Amazingly, the Garmin eTrex GPS
which is indeed a small wonder gets the wonderful highlights of
a 12 proportioned channel GPS receiver that can be placed into a
small pouch that is about four by two inches wide. And as such,
the Garmin eTrex GPS sits comfortably in your palm and is not as
bulky feeling as some other Garmin's reviewed.
Besides the Garmin eTrex GPS's cute size, the receiver will
continuously track your route and does this accurately by using
up to 12 satellites to triangulate your position. The Garmin
eTrex GPS also has a catchy design and conveniently has it's
buttons to the side for easy reach and seems to be common
benefit with the Garmin GPS series receivers. My only grip is
the LCD screen could be a little larger but that's nit picking
at it's best.
Another feature which turns out to be a great benefit is that
it's a waterproof unit so if it's accidentally immersion in
water,or drops out of your pocket into the river, will still
perform its operations. Great! With the Garmin eTrex GPS
translucent yellow case it will not be likely to be misplaced
and if this does happens you don't need to worry because the
Garmin eTrex GPS's bright yellow case will help you find it so
easy in any boat or backpack. It'll stick out like a sore thumb in
the night.
The Garmin eTrex GPS is definitely a user friendly GPS able to
store up to 500 user waypoints with accompanied graphical
icons.This means you'll never loose that favourite
fishing/camping spot (unless you leave the Garmin eTrex GPS at
home). The Garmin eTrex GPS can reverse back through your
waypoints which is a great feature. The tracking log in the
Garmin eTrex GPS unit will be viewed strung together on the map

On the road devices are usually temporary mounted in the vehicle with suction cups or bean bags. Most of these devices have turn-by-turn instructions and auto correction if you miss a turn. I would highly recommend getting a device with the auto-correction feature, that way you don't have to mess with the device if you take a wrong turn, it will recalculate the route for you automatically. There are some devices that are also portable, so you can unplug them from your vehicle and take them with you as you walk around in a large city. My favorite in this category is the Garmin c330, c340, and c530 series. They are a wonderful size for using it in the vehicle and small enough to use as a portable. They have city maps pre-loaded, so they are not much use off-road. Many of the newest designs have built in picture viewers, MP3 players, traffic updates (careful, that usually costs extra!!), and many other bells and whistles. One of the best features of the Garmin c-series line is the ability to ask for the closest landmarks, such as food, gas, shopping, golf courses, etc. Make sure you understand what it has and what you want to use for before making the final decision.
One of the most asked questions is should I buy the car with GPS already in it? Personally, I don't like that option because it limits how you can upgrade, and the device cannot be used in multiple vehicles. Some car manufacturers are charging several hundred dollars to update the map data on these devices and you have little choice in using them to do this. The GPS market is an ever changing market and I like to be in control of which device I want to purchase. Having said that, I am choosing to have a device mounted to my dash or windshield (suction cups....also illegal in some states, so make sure you know which ones!!!) with wires trailing to the power source. Some folks don't like that, it is a trade off you have to decide on.
On the trail devices are handhelds which depict topographical, or basic mapping data, not detailed street level details. These are great for hiking and geocaching. They have the ability to either import coordinate, or download coordinates of a location and then tell you how close you are to that point and which way you need to go to get there. For hiking, you can set different points as you walk, like a breadcrumb trail so you can get yourself out the way you came in. These devices range from $80-$500+ depending on the different capabilities of the device. Some of the higher end models allow you to buy pre-loaded map detail on memory cards, so they can double as driving directions, however, they still don't have the turn-by-turn capabilities.
GPS devices used on the water are fixed mount devices. These devices can have water depth, temperature, etc, especially helpful for the fisherman. Maps that can be downloaded can have tidal waters, known shipwrecks, ports, and are very detailed. There is a huge range of devices to consider in this area.
Keep in mind that mapping software used on these devices changes about 1-2 times per year. Less frequently for the maps on the water. Understand what your devices downloading capabilities are so you don't get stuck with outdated maps forever! Also beware that because maps change, you have to be somewhat flexible when following the directions. I have had instances where it tells you to "turn left here", only to have that be the wrong way on a one-way street!!! In other words, these are guides to get you close to where you need to be, you cannot use them as gospel....common sense should prevail!

Fun Ltd, I bought this to connect to my O2 XDA 2i PDA and it

biased. I thought for £40 I'll take a chance and so bought it,
all credit to Mobile Fun the receiver arrived the very next
morning. Upon opening the box I was a little disappointed, all
the there was by means of instructions was a small sheet of
paper that had been loosely translated from Japanese to English
by a dyslexic toddler. You can download the user manual from
here and the Tomtom pairing manual from here. After following
these instructions you will have it set up in no time. Another
thing I noticed was that there is no manufaturer's name or marks
anywhere on the device or the packaging, which makes searching
for support quite difficult.
A nice touch with this little device is that it is supplied with
a battery that is common to a lot of Nokia phones (3.7V 850mAh
Li-polymer battery, BL-5C), a quick search on ebay means that
you can get replacement batteries for these receivers for about
£4 which is good to know should you need one.

and running in less than 5 minutes. I have only charged the
receiver once since I bought it about 2 months ago, the battery
just seems to last forever! The supplied in car charger and USB
cable means that the receiver can be charged on the move from a
12v source and can also be charged from any PC or laptop. From
cold start up the receiver aquires a usuable GPS signal exremely
quickly, quicker than most of the really expensive GPS receivers
that I've come in contact with. The device is extremely small
and can easily fit into any space in your car, or even your
pocket if you're using it for walking or cycling.
One small problem I did have is that when using it with my XDA
2i the Tomtom software would often freeze and cause me to stop
the car, reboot my phone, then carry on my journey. At first I
thought this was the result of the XDA losing its connection
with the bluetooth receiver and hence confirming my fears about
the price of this product. It quickly became apparent that this
was not the case and it was in fact an issue with my PDA and the
Tomtom software.
I quickly discovered a workaround for this issue between the
Tomtom software and my XDA that enables the whole system to work
flawlessly. I shall write a 'how to' on this workaround shortly
as I'm sure many other XDA 2i users share the same problem.
I do know that there is a known issue when using any bluetooth
GPS receivers with the O2 XDA 2 (note not XDA 2i) due to the
bluetooth stack settings that are shipped with the phone, please
be aware of this before buying this device as you are sure to
encounter problems.

Magellan RoadMate Series. For boating and other marine
applications, be sure your GPS has these features: marine
mapping, color screen, active sonar, back tracking, a computer
interface and weatherproofing. I recommend marine GPS Units in
the Garmin GPSMAP Series.
Prices for GPS units vary a great deal and in general, you get
what you pay for. While some units cost around $100 and offer
relatively few features, others may cost as much as $1000 or
even more and are loaded with dozens of features. Here is a good
rule of thumb for determining how much money to spend on your
next GPS. You should expect to pay between $200 and $300 to get
a decent GPS Unit. I own a Garmin eTrex Vista. I believe it is
the best GPS available for under $300.

multiple objects simultaneously although they may experience
interference with mechanisms that produce magnetic fields of
their own.
Acoustic tracking devices employ ultrasonic sound waves that
measure the position and orientation of the entity being
tracked. This can be done through time-of-flight tracking and
phase-coherence tracking.
The first type works by measuring the time needed to take for
the sound sent out by transmitters placed on the target to reach
sensors located at specific points.
The second type works by measuring the difference in phase
between the sound waves produced by a transmitter on the target
and those given off by a transmitter at some reference point.
