Few technologies are worth investing in if you can’t have a little fun. Even the early PDP-1s, massive supercomputers used at MIT in the early 1960s, were used by bored modders to play Space Wars. Similarly, GPS trackers can serve a plethora of purposes, some useful, some silly. Sure, the practical applications are great—who doesn’t like safety or fleet management functions?—but how can tracking devices mix things up a little? Here are four quickies:
Fitness Tracking: Okay, bad start, here. Exercise isn’t always fun for everyone, but implementing a GPS tracker into your program can be. Keep tabs on the distance you’ve run, noting times, speed, and which areas on your route you struggled most. If you’re a biker, GPS trackers can especially help you beef up or trim down your route as needed. Don’t underestimate the power of pinning stats on your routine—seeing where and why you need improvement, not to mention how far you’ve come, is surprisingly motivating.
Geotag Your Pix: You may not be the most faithful scrap booker in the world, but there’s something amazing about being able to see where and when a picture was taken. Gone are the foreign luggage stickers as the touristy emblem of choice, and in are the geotags, which can quickly establish your reputation as master globe trotter. No need to buy a new camera—simply carry a GPS tracker along on your trip and note the time of each collection of shots. Use a free mapping program like GPS Visualizer and suddenly your albums just got a whole lot more interesting.
Follow Your Team: This doesn’t include any purchase, actually. Plenty of sporting events are starting to incorporate GPS trackers to draw fans into the action. The Alaskan Fur Rondy dog sled race just recently installed tracking devices on all participating sleds, which means fans could follow their favorites online. For long distance and wide field sports where cameras have a hard time keeping up, GPS trackers are bringing the action to you.
Save Money: Few things are more immediately satisfying than seeing an investment you made in some particular gadget actually save you money. GPS trackers can deter or recover your property from loss or theft, which is certainly a penny-saver, and the technology can also get you significant discounts on your monthly car insurance premium.
