GPS Tracking Device

Many of us have mailed a package only to hear months later that it never arrived.  It could have even been a Christmas present or an expensive piece of equipment.  What about luggage on that overseas airplane flight?  Lost without a trace…at least that’s what the airline company said.  What about people who ship large containers overseas—people who take on a company mission at the Paris branch or the relief organizations that send large amounts of humanitarian supplies to needy companies? 

How can someone keep track of their stuff so that they know exactly where it is at all times and know exactly when it arrives?  It might not be quite as important for smaller packages or items if a UPS tracking number can be acquired, but if someone is planning an international move, a big trip, or shipping Christmas presents to all fifty family members living in Europe, they might want to consider tracking their “stuff” with a GPS tracking device, especially if the shipment includes valuable goods. 

There have been stories of containers ending up at the wrong dock racking up fees for not being picked up while the desperate owners searched everywhere.  And it never feels good to end up at point A with your luggage lost and no extra change of clothes.  While someone may feel that a GPS device is an expensive way to insure the exact location of goods, the adage “better safe than sorry” might be a good motto to adopt depending on the circumstances. 

As GPS tracking technology advances, the devices are becoming smaller and more efficient.  The way it works is through a system of approximately 24 satellites.  These satellites actually orbit in outer space and work together in groups of twos or threes (usually groups of three) to determine the exact latitude and longitude of the wearer on earth—be it a person, a vehicle, or a container.  The information downloads constantly to the internet.  A person can also check on a mobile or other device. 

An active system is a minute-by-minute (or second by second!) real-time record.  A passive system is a historical log of what occurred—this type is usually better for company fleet tracking where the employer will check the records later.  If someone is planning a trip, an international move, or an expensive shipment, consider the possibility of a GPS tracking device to best track personal “stuff.”
