As schools are out for the summer, many teenagers and college students will be planning vacations together. Whether it’s a road trip across the country or a week-long beach getaway, parents may be concerned about the safety of their teenage children as they go on vacations. The fact that a set of parents or teachers are going along as chaperones might not be enough of a comfort to these parents. The Natalee Holloway abduction in 2005 is probably still fresh in their minds as they think about where their children want to go on vacation and what they will be doing. No parent wants to go through what Holloway’s family and others have experienced after a child goes missing. But how can parents protect their children when they are far away?
A real time GPS tracker can be placed on the teenager’s person in order to monitor his or her movements. A personal GPS tracking unit could be in the form of a tracking bracelet or a small unit sewn into a jacket or designed into a pair of tennis shoes. The information from the tracking unit can be viewed by the parents from any computer with internet access so they can instantly locate their child.
If a teenager is separated from the group, the information from this personal GPS tracking device can be given to the local authorities. If the law enforcement officials know the location of the missing individual, it will not be long until he or she is found and safe.
Parents might consider using a vehicle tracking system if the young people are going on a road trip, but this does not guarantee that all of the young people are in the vehicle. This is why a personal GPS tracker is probably the best choice. Also, something like a tracking bracelet would be better than sewing the tracker into the jacket, because the teen will probably not be wearing the jacket throughout the entire trip.
Parents should sit down with their teen aged or college aged children, discuss this issue with them, and come to a conclusion about a GPS tracker together. This will ensure that the parents can rest safely, knowing that their child is aware of the dangers and will be responsible while on the trip.
We will never know if a personal GPS tracker would have saved Natalee Holloway. It is still a mystery what exactly happened after Natalee disappeared. But GPS tracking devices can give parents peace of mind about their own children even though they are separated by hundreds or even thousands of miles.
