Vehicle tracking systems come in many shapes and sizes and serve a variety of purposes. When most people think about GPS, they are thinking in terms of assistance with personal navigation. Over the last several years, GPS systems have taken on a new function, primarily for monitoring drivers - "spying", if you will. Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies are using the technology to fight crime on a daily basis. Legislation and court filings by these groups have sought to require search warrants prior to the use of covert GPS vehicle tracking, However a decision by the 7th Circuit of the US Court of Appeals has ruled that placing a GPS tracking device on a vehicle is lawful and does not require a search warrant, The federal government successfully argued that placing a GPS tracking device on a vehicle does not violate the 4th Amendment of the Constitution and is not an unreasonable search of the vehicle. The vehicles were not entered or physically searched. This means that all that is needed to employ a device is normal probable cause.

Many states and local governments have however enacted laws and regulations limiting the use of GPS vehicle tracking. As a general rule a private citizen may only place a device on a vehicle they own, leases or rents. Prior to employing a GPS tracking device on any other vehicle it would be wise to contact your States Attorney General Office for advice. Failure to do so could result in severe legal liabilities that may include incarceration.

New strides in technology have greatly reduced the size of GPS tracking units. Some GPS data logging devices are no larger than a pen. Even the real time tracking devices are now available in the size of a pack of cards.

The units that use older data logging technology are the cheapest and easiest tracking devices to use. In addition these units do not require any monthly fees or use of a third party to access tracking information. The downside of employing this type of tracking device is that it must be retrieved in order to access the tracking information.

Real time GPS tracking devices provide current or real time tracking information. This information is gathered by the tracking device then uploaded to a service provider using existing cell phone or satellite phone technology. The service provider then provides access to this information to its clients. Information gathered by this method unlike data logging is subject to possible compromise.

Never the less the bottom line is that the use of covert GPS vehicle tracking devices by private citizens requires a great deal of discretion and judgment. Failure to do so could lead to severe legal penalties.

GPS systems are used in a variety of different applications and they have a wide variety of features.  One of the things that is interesting is seeing where these systems have come in the last half decade, and also seeing the price drop of these different systems.  As technology improves, you can do more with less.  There will be a point where the cost of using GPS will come to a low point, as the tracking satelites used won't have changed because of the cost of replacing all 24 satellites.  In this article, the author discusses which of the GPS systems out there is the best one to invest in.  This article focuses mostly on the handheld GPS tracking devices that are available, so if you are looking for other types of systems, this article won't be as helpful to you.  Read on for more.

 

Well, that's a pretty big question with a lot of possible answers. In this article I'll talk about the GPS marketplace, various features, and also give you some pointers about what manufacturers are the best to buy. All of this is my opinion, so do your research and then purchase your GPS.

Really to answer the question of what's the best GPS system to buy, I would have to know you, your budget, and your needs. For instance, are you going to be using the GPS in the course of your business. Before I became a writer, I sold real estate. This was way back in the day. I had a well used atlas of city streets, and before I left to show properties, I would have to plan my route. For someone like that a GPS that has the ability of inputing more then one route, would have been a life saver. That's called "multi-point" routing, in GPS speak.

Right now, there are several GPS's to choose from with multi-point routing. Garmin has a ton of them. Anything from the nuvi 465 to the nuvi 885 has multi-point routing. Also, the 1490's and 1690's have that, too. This is a functionality that's not prohibitively expensive, too. For instance, the Garmin nuvi 755 costs less than $200, yet has multi-point routing. If you don't want a Garmin, then Magellan has several models with this. Magellan calls this "multi-destination routing", by the way. Many of their RoadMate line has this, along with a few of their Maestros. Finally, TomTom has several models with this. The Tom Tom One has this at a very competitive price.

So, what if you're just using your GPS for trips, or not for business. I can't think of many people who need multi-point routing in their personal lives. Well, if your definition of what's the best GPS system to buy doesn't include multi-point routing, you can save yourself some money.

Other features you might want to think about are Bluetooth, for hands-free calling and real time traffic and weather. If you your definition of what's the best GPS system to buy includes Bluetooth, you might want to make sure the GPS actually works with your particular phone. Sometimes, you'll get a device which is supposed to have Bluetooth (and does), but it's not compatible with your phone. Can you tell this before you buy? If you have a fairly new phone, then you should be okay. Just be aware. You can get models from all the top manufacturers with this.

Personally, my idea of what's the best GPS system to buy includes real time traffic and weather. I like knowing about the weather, and I commute a lot right now, so knowing about traffic snarls helps a lot. Of interest here is some of Garmin's newer nuvi models. Garmin has this new service called nuLink. Pretty cool stuff! Definitely part of my idea of what's the best GPS system to buy.

This is an article about the WAAS system that is used to make the GPS system more accurate.  It originated in the aviation industry where it is critical to know exactly where planes in the air are... especially at busy airports!  Now this system is used on the consumer market as well.  This article gives some history about this augmented gps tracking system and some of the strengths and weakneses of the system.

WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) was developed by the Federal Aviation Administration to augment the Global Positioning System to improve its accuracy, integrity, and availability. WAAS was originally intended to enable aircraft to rely on GPS for all phases of flight, including the precision approach to airport's within its coverage area. The WAAS system typically provides better than 1.0 meters laterally and 1.5 meters vertically throughout most of the contiguous United States and large parts of Canada and Alaska. This accuracy is capable of provideing aircraft with the precision needed for safe approaches and inflight navigation for all weather conditions. Integrity of the WAAS information is no more than 3 seconds of bad data per year allowing the system to be considerd safe by the FAA for instrument flight rules.

Although orignally developed for aviation, WAAS is not just limited to the aviation industry, any GPS receiver that is capable of receiving the WAAS signal will be able to benefit from it's correction data, making the GPS positioning more accurate. In fact a WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can even give you directions right down to the lane your car is traveling in (as long as the maping program supports "lane assist" directions). Because the Wide Area Augmentation System is quickly becoming standard in the GPS industry, most new GPS receivers today are WAAS-enabled. Just like with the conventinal GPS, the WAAS system doesn't come with any extra cost or fees to use. All that is required is that the GPS receiver be WAAS-enabled so it can receive and decode the data then be able to apply corrections to it's position. Currently the WAAS service is limited to the U.S.A., Canada, Alaska and Hawaii. Although independant from WAAS, Europe and Asia are working on their own supplemental GPS correction systems. Europe has the  "Euro Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service" (EGNOS) and Japan is working on their "Multi-Functional Satellite Augmentation System" (MSAS) .

How The WAAS System Works

WAAS uses a network of approximately 25 ground based Wide-area Reference Stations (WRS) in North America and Hawaii, to measure small variations in GPS satellite signals in the western hemisphere. These precisely surveyed ground stations monitor and collect information on the GPS signals and send their data to the three Wide-area Master Stations (WMS). The WMS's generate two different sets of corrections: fast and slow. The fast corrections are for errors that are changing rapidly and are a primary concern to the GPS satellites instantaneous positions and clock errors. These corrections are user position independent, which means they can be applied instantly by any receiver in the WAAS broadcasting area. The slow corrections are for long-term ephemeric and clock error estimates and ionospheric delay information.

Once these corrections are generated, the Master Stations sends them to two pairs of Ground Uplink Stations (GUS) that transmit the correction messages to a series of geostationary satellites that broadcast their correction data back to earth. Then WAAS-enabled GPS receivers use this information to make corrections to the original GPS signial, giving WAAS-enabled GPS receiver a more accurate position. GPS receiver's use the information broadcast from each GPS satellite to determine their location and the current time. Depending on the GPS device, a GPS receiver only needs to receive a signal from 3-4 satellites (out of the 31 satellites currently transmiting a signal for civilan users) to be able to calculate it's position. In addition to the GPS signal, a WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can also receive the geostationary WAAS satellite signal.

The two different types of correction messages from the WAAS system (fast and slow) are used by  the GPS receiver in different ways. The fast type of correction data includes the corrected satellite position and clock data to determine its current location using normal GPS calculations. Once an approximate position fix is obtained the GPS receiver begins to use the slow corrections to improve its accuracy. Slow correction data Includes the ionospheric delay. When the GPS signal travels from the satellite to the receiver, it passes through the ionosphere. The receiver calculates the location where the signal pierced the ionosphere and, if it has received an ionospheric delay value for that location, it corrects for the error  that the ionosphere created. Unlike the fast data, the slow data doesn't need to be updated frequently because the ionosphere conditions don't change rapidly. While the slow data can be updated every minute if necessary, they are only updated every two minutes and are considered valid for up to six minutes.

Limitations of the WAAS System

(1) The WAAS system is currently only available to United States and large parts of Canada and Alaska but there plans to expand the system to other countries and continents.

(2) Because the WAAS broadcasting satellites are geostationary  causes them to be less than 10° above the horizon for locations north of 71.4° latitude. This means aircraft in areas of Alaska or northern Canada may have difficulty maintaining a lock on the WAAS signal.

(3) In order to calculate an ionospheric grid point's delay, that point must be located between a satellite and a reference station. The low number of satellites and ground stations limit the number of points which can be calculated.

(4) Aircraft conducting WAAS approaches must possess certified GPS receivers.
